Whiles in school, about 70% of students do not bother to find out more about what curriculum vitae does and what it can do for them in school or immediately after school. These same people will come out and start to ask how curriculum vitae is prepared, seeking to compete with people who have written and professionalized their CV to a high pedestal. I am a witness to a class mate who has never looked for employment in her life and as a result does not even know how a CV looks like or what it contains. She has heard the word CV alright but she has not made her challenge to find out more about it because after school it will play a major role in her life in terms of searching for unavailable jobs. The irony is that, she was the best student in our group of graduate with a high CGPA. Although I have made it a point to create my own employment in order not to depend on the system, government or any other person, I believe that I will outwit this girl if we were to pursue the same job for employment.
Curriculum Vitae (CV) can be described as brief outline details of a candidate's education, training, skills and employment experience which are provided with a view to securing employment. In my own definition, CV is another version of advertising who you are, what you have done and what you can do if given the opportunity. Just like you see companies and organizations advertise their products and services in various media platforms by providing what they do or their product does and what it can do for potential customers and customers.
Job hunting has become very competitive process due to the sheer volume of graduates being churned out into the system and the high unemployment rate taking place all around the world. It has become a common place that MBA graduates settle with undergraduate job positions or even less than that. The challenge is that they will tell you they had no options since there are no suitable jobs in the system. A friend who had completed university applied for a job to teach in a primary school and proprietor was reluctant to accept the application because the gentleman was over qualified for the position. Such is the challenge staring us in the face.
As a result, your CV is what will help put you ahead of other candidates and get you the interview, where you can show your suitability for the job through the kind of answer you provide. Hence, getting a positive response from your CV upon application is key.
When a company gives you employment, they are saying that you have certain skills that are of value to them and therefore they are willing to compensate you for using those skills to help the company grow. What it means is that, when applying to a company for a job, you should provide adequate information on the skills set that you have and how it can be useful to the company or make the company better than you met it. So, your CV is the first opportunity that you have to state your case to an employer or a recruiter telling them why you are more suitable for the role for which you are applying for. That is why your CV is a selling tool or advertisement for you and not a mere an account of your experience. These skills vary but some of the skills are common in almost all types of positions. However, some skills are more important in certain positions than others and so you should be able to identify which skills set are suitable for specific positions and as a result, you should hammer on those set of skills especially whenever you are applying for a position that states the kind of skills they are looking.
If you consider your CV as a sales document your, then you must use it to show the benefits of hiring you over other candidates and make it easy for an employer to see the specific advantages of hiring, or more specifically, buying your skills.
It may not be easy to see yourself and your experience in terms of benefits for a prospective employer but in order to ensure the greatest chance of getting employed you must draw out your achievements and highlight ‘what you can do for them’ in terms of the skills you have acquired and practiced. The best CV should ensure that you notable with little effort from other applicants. It should explicitly show what you can do for them and how you match what the employer is looking for.
